VIDEO: First Panel – Why Are Populist and Illiberal Movements Gaining Strength in Western Europe?

Why are traditional political parties losing support, and what is driving voters towards new political movements?

The first panel of a public debate organised by Strategeo Institute in cooperation with Anglo-American University explored the reasons behind the growing support for populist and illiberal parties in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The discussion focused on the impact of migration, social media and the weakening of the traditional political centre. The speakers offered different perspectives on why established parties are struggling to respond to voters’ expectations and how protest movements are reshaping European politics.

Another key issue was the political isolation of radical parties. Could bringing them into government lead to more moderate positions, or might it pose a risk to democratic institutions? The panellists examined the arguments on both sides.

The first panel featured:

  • Zuzana Lizcová, Head of the Department of German and Austrian Studies, Institute of International Studies, Charles University
  • Roman Joch, Chairman of the Civic Institute and lecturer at Anglo-American University
  • Tomáš Klvaňa, Executive Director of Aspen Institute Central Europe
  • Martin Weiss, political commentator for Echo24 and Týdeník Echo

The discussion was moderated by Jan Macháček, President of Strategeo Institute.

What is driving the transformation of Western European politics, and can traditional parties reverse their decline?
